Journalism in A Pandemic World

The Coronavirus has been a pandemic across the world that has been causing so much distress and chaos. We, as a civilization, have been closing off anything to do with human interaction. Concerts, theatre plays, sporting events, have all been cancelled. Trips overseas cancelled. Sixteen million people in Northern Italy have even been quarantined due to this fiasco. As a journalist, I’ve learned a lot of lessons during this pandemic that will help me grow exponentially.

Obviously, you must expect the unexpected, but nobody truly lives their lives like that. The first lesson I learned as a journalist during the COVID-19 pandemic is how to find alternative ways to interview. Usually, I conduct my interviews in person, but since this pandemic, we have practice social distancing. This has led me to in doing my interviews through Skype, Instagram, Twitter, and phone call. Even though most of these means aren’t necessarily practical, they still give you the ability to provide your interviewees with a chance to tell a story that can resonate with people.

Another important lesson I learned during my quarantine is to stay calm. For the most part, I’m a pretty calm person, but like I previously stated, ‘you must expect the unexpected.’ This lesson has taught me just to take life day by day and adjust as the day goes on instead of trying to control the situation, especially if it is out of my control. As a Journalist, I fell that learning how to be composed will help me when I’m on the job, and chaotic situations arise.
